Reflecting, Social Bookmarking, Creative Commons, and RSS
Reflection:
Above you will see the 960x200 pixel banner I created using the online resource Pizlr. Using Pixlr I was able to make a custom-sized banner relatively easily, using the tools provided to insert images and text to make the finished product you see above. For this banner, I decided to find three logos with coincide with the areas of focus for the week, which will be discussed in the remainder of this blog.
Social Bookmarking:
While social bookmarking resources are not commonly used as much right now, these websites could be used to save (bookmark) and label different resources and tools in one space. On these sites, the individual who inserts a bookmark can either publish such as public or private, which can then be looked up on these sites using the label assigned to each bookmark. The main use of social bookmarking sites is to make it easier to save and share bookmarks collectively in one space, making it easier to search and find these resources again when they are needed. Currently, we have evolved versions of these sites, or tools within apps that do essentially the same thing as social bookmarking. For example, on some social media and applications you can save posts and information to your account, the main difference is these collections saved are typically private now.
Creative Commons:
Creative Commons allows creators to establish the ways in which their publically published work can be used by others. From what I have gathered, the purpose of Creative Commons is to essentially shortcut the process of copyright permissions, allowing creators to default the allowed uses and intentions of their work. There are different kinds of Creative Commons that creators can select from to align with their intentions for the use of their work.
RSS:
RSS technology combines the feeds and updates from your most used sites and applications in one place, to minimize the need for toggling between these different sites and applications.
The Machine is Us/ing Us:
The concept of algorithm is essentially what "the machine is using us" for. Throughout our ventures on different websites, we gravitate towards the things we find interest in, and our technology tracks this information in order to be able to show us similar things that we may find interest in, and further continue our use of the internet and its resources. For example, if you were to browse an app like Instagram and click on a link to an online store, this store will then continue to show up in your feed, along with similar websites. If you use Facebook mainly to catch up on news, your feed will continue to show you mainly news articles. The machine uses us to collect intel on what entertainment to provide us with.
